XBMC integration |
|
Has anyone thought of writing plugins for XBMC? Since XBMC is such a powerful open source (free) multimedia tool, would it not make sense for us to begin writing plugins for XBMC. I understand VCRIB has multimedia capabilities built in, but leveraging XBMC would seem to be an easier and more refined way of moving forward.

Of course it could be done, you just need enough support, know how and interest to do it. There is already a Winamp plug-in, but I think you'll find that people are particular to their media solution of choice. Bob and I use SageTV, I think Vaughn uses Windows Media center on occation. XBMC is another of those that could be integrated, but I don't think there is enough critical mass, at the moment, in the vCrib user community to make a unified effort in any one direction supporting any one media management solution.
XBMC may well be the best way to meet the requirements of that feature set, and integrate into the automation. For me personally, the automation side is hands free and media side is hands on. I don't use much in the way of buttons or voice commands with automation anyway. If I am going to be hands on with my media presentation it does not need to be fully integrated with the automation. Automation can be running in the background. To that end, I can already do many things with command lines, event ghost, etc. to do things like pause playback when the phone or door bell rings. But being me, I haven't, nor have I even used the Winamp plug-in.
If it is a simple enough API, it could be coded rather quickly, Ill let one of the code monkey's comment on that.

I created a simple plugin for the HTPC app Meedio a while back that would dim the lights when a video started playing. It was a pretty cool set up. I'm sure something similar could be done for XBMC.

I would kill 7 people to get some sort of SageTV module that would do some sweet stuff within vCrib. I have an XBox as wel, but I mainly use SageTV on a daily basis.
