Post Question about Powerlinc version Reply with quote
Hey guys,

I just wanted to ask you if a serial port version of the Powerlinc will work OK with vCrib. I know Vaughn has the USB one, that's why I ask. I'm not sure what kind Humanzee has in his Crib.

I've read elsewhere that the serial version is faster and/or more reliable or something, than the USB version. I'm not sure if that's true, but I figured I'd look into getting a serial one if possible.

Can you let me know ASAP, thanks!

They are the same as I use Smarthome's Insteon SDM as a middle layer. vCrib does not have to deal with the serial communications.

I have the USB version. I wonder if the serial would be any faster. If it were definitively so, I might switch. I think most of my latency is on the x10 sensor side.

There is still a little room for performance improvements in vCrib, but I think bad links in Insteon are playing a part too. I will focus on speed once we have a stable version people are happy with.

Wewt, someone just posted up that they have a serial PLC for sale, for $35. Used two hours, lol.

I posted dibs, but hopefully I can score it and finally start slowly accumulating Insteon stuff. If anything, I can use some of this cheap ass x10 hardwired stuff I have.

Yay, I got my used Powerlinc in the mail a couple days ago. I don't have a phase coupler yet, but maybe I can try testing it out by plugging in a few things on the same phase or something.

I probably won't have time to play with it until this weekend. All my free time has been taken up by playing with Bluetooth Wiimote hacks. lol. Fun stuff Smile

Make sure I have your address Bob. I have two SignalLincs and a couple lamp and appliance links for you. They won't bridge your X10, but they will get your Insteon up and running.

Hey guys,

I'm going to play with it a little later today, but do I have to specify the port that the Insteon PLC will run on?

Here's what my standard vCrib.ini file looks like. You can see the w800rf has a port entry, but there's nothing for the PLC. I have a serial PLC

PATH=C:\Program Files\vCrib
DBSERVER=localhost
DATABASE=archon_dbo
USER=vcrib
PASSWORD=vcrib
LOG_SIZE=300
MASTER=Master
INSTEON=Insteon PLC Main
AB8SS_PORT=1
PHIDGET=Phidget 888
W800RF=W800RF
W800RF_PORT=1
VR=VR Main
SMTP=Email Main
SPEAKER=Speaker Main
USBUIRT=USBUIRT Main
TURRET=TURRET1
GYM=GYM
CALLERID=Caller ID

Do I just add it manually or something?
ie...
INSTEON_PORT=2

Thanks

OK, I was just able to update my database, and I copied the new exe's over. Now I want to try to get the Serial Powerlinc up and running for the first time.

Can someone give me a hint on how to get a PLC up and running the first time. I bought this one used, so it didn't come with any hardware or software.

I plugged it in and the whitish-blue LED is lit. The only other button is one marked 'set'. I have the serial cable plugged into the PLC and connected to my computer's COM4 port. I verified this COM to work with a different serial hardware device earlier.

Here's what it looks like when I run the Insteon (0.0.5.5) exe file:

Hmmm, I'll need help with figuring this all out. I'm basically also trying to test out my PLC to make sure it works (since it was used).

Does anyone know of any other free software that will allow me to test this thing out quickly? This is the serial version, everything I can find seems to only interface with USB version? Girder, Homeseer...etc

Do I have to create/add manually the Powerlinc as an object within vCrib? I'm going to need a lil tutorial on how to get this up and running. Everything just worked simply with the w800rf, and all the wireless devices were auto detected and whatnot. I feel like this isn't going to be so easy

Thanks,
Bob

No but you have to instsall the SDM software. I only interface with the Smarthome Device Manager, so they handle serial code, I don't. So no port info in vCrib.

I think you want like version 3.08.
