network monitor |
|
I was reading this topic: http://thevirtualcrib.com/phpbbdir/viewtopic.php?t=47
...and I was thinking about how we can expand on this. I was thinking an app could be created to be a sort of vCrib network monitor. It would poll the network to find any machines and record them as objects with their MAC/IP address and then update continue polling to determine if they are online, probably just by pinging them. It would also be able to accept commands from vCrib to send magic packets to specific machines in order to wake them up if they support WOL. Ideally, I think this would work best integrated into Master, but maybe not. Anyone have any other ideas for what this kind of app could do?

I had always though you would need to run an app on the client PC's but this make sense to be able to ping or look for shared directories etc. It seems a nice companion to the CMDLine.exe Where in, you can do a number of things that are specific to PC hardware or other software that you have. Really though the possibilities here are so broad, its hard to pick a direction to go. we need to think in terms of automating the PC an not just the home. I already use the cmdline.exe to control SageTV a bit (start recording from the front door camera, when there is motion), you may also want to do similar things with web camera software, or start recording audio, if there is an alarm status. You could do things like detect USB keys to use as security credentials. There are also close parallels there with the capabilities of EventGhost. to control PC attached/controlled devices across the network.
Scenario, Alarm status, All PC's wake from sleep, their web cam software launches to record the room, keyboard and mouse are disabled. recorded files are uploaded automatically to online storage.
I imagine if I were an intruder, I'd have pause if I knew I was on camera, and things seemed to be happening automatically as I walked around the house.

I agree this would probably go well with CMDLine. The problem with combining with CMDLine is that it is designed to run on multiple computers and the network monitor app would only run on the vCrib machine.
I think an effort should definitely be made to try and combine functionality into one application when it makes sense. This will help to reduce the traffic and load on the DB.
I have started to develop this app and so far I have a user configurable IP range to scan. The app will then scan that range to look for any machines that are online. Then the user will be able to add them to vCrib. I have yet to implement any sort of WOL yet.

If it should only be done from 1 machine, master.exe is the place to put it.
